Klinsmann is in full swing in his bid to regain the Asian Cup for the first time in 64 years. Klinsmann has named his June A match roster with players he has handpicked and plans to find the optimal squad by the tournament next January.
Head coach Jürgen Klinsmann (pictured) announced his June A squad on Friday at the Jongno-gu Football Hall in Seoul. The national team will face Peru on June 16 at the Busan Asiad Stadium and El Salvador on June 20 at the Daejeon World Cup Stadium.
The call-up is actually Klinsmann’s first. For the March A match, his first since taking over in March, the roster was largely composed of World Cup players due to a lack of time and in consideration of the team’s progression to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 23-man roster announced today includes the usual suspects – Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur), Lee Kang-in (Mallorca), Hwang In-beom (Olympiakos), Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton) and Lee Jae-sung (Mainz) – while three newcomers, Hong Hyun-seok (KAA Gent), Park Yong-woo (Ulsan Hyundai) and Ahn Hyun-beom (Jeju United), who play in the Belgian league, made their first appearance for the national team.
“We had a good match against Colombia and Uruguay in March,” said Klinsmann. “The most important thing is the Asian Cup in Qatar in January next year. This is part of the preparation for that.”
One of the most prominent figures is midfielder Son Jun-ho (Shandong Taishan). He has been detained and investigated by public security forces in China’s Liaoning province since March 12. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that he is being investigated on suspicion of soliciting non-state actors.
It was more of a show of support from the national team than a decision based on the likelihood of his release. “We’re doing everything we can as a federation,” Klinsmann said, “but we don’t know how he is mentally and physically. However, his performance in the March A match against Colombia and Uruguay was positive,” Klinsmann said. “This roster may change when we convene next week.”
In the defense, there are some big 스포츠토토 changes. With “Iron Pillar” Kim Min-jae (Napoli) in basic military training and Kim Young-kwon (Ulsan) and Kim Moon-hwan (Jeonbuk Hyundai) out with injuries, Park Ji-soo (Portimonense), Kim Joo-sung (FC Seoul) and Ahn Hyun-beom have been added. “I didn’t see him play, but I monitored him,” Klinsmann said of Ahn, “He’s aggressive and plays well on the flanks. He’s similar to Lee Kang-in, and I like aggressive players like that.”
Hwang Eui-jo (Seoul), Cho Kyu-sung (Jeonbuk), and Oh Hyun-gyu (Celtic) were called up once again, the most prominent strikers in Klinsmann’s system.
However, Ulsan’s In-Jin Gyu did not make the cut this time around. Despite being one of the top strikers in the K League, leading the league in goals in 2021, second in goals in 2022, and tied for first in goals (8) in 2023, he was overlooked by his predecessor, Paulo Bento, and has yet to be selected under Klinsmann.
