The Pittsburgh Pirates won by one run. Bae Ji-hwan (24) drove in the lone run with his foot.
Pittsburgh won a 2-1 home game against the New York Mets in the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S., on Wednesday. After taking the first game of the three-game series against the Mets on April 10, Pittsburgh swept the series with a 14-7 victory in a pitcher’s duel.
Bae Ji-hwan drove in the winning run. After going 0-for-4 the day before, he started in the two-hole and batted seventh, going 1-for-4 with a run scored. His season batting average dropped slightly from 0.271 to 0.270.
Bae was quiet in the first inning. In his first at-bat with runners on first and second in the second inning, he could only manage a grounder to the second baseman.
Pittsburgh then gave up a solo home run to the Mets’ Jeff McNeil in the fourth inning, but battled back in the bottom of the fourth. Leadoff hitter 안전놀이터 Zack Swinski answered with a solo shot to tie the game first.
A batter later, Bae started the comeback with a single to right-center field on a changeup from Mets Carlos Carrasco. It was a single, but Bae’s quick feet found a gap in the defense and he turned it into a double.
Bae wasted no time in advancing to third on Carrasco’s wild pitch and came home on Tukupita Makano’s single to right field to complete the comeback. It was the final run of the game. Bae then retired the side in order in the sixth and struck out the side in the eighth to end his at-bat.
Meanwhile, team leader Andrew McCutchen, who started in the leadoff spot, went 1-for-3 with a walk and a hit to record his 2,000th career hit. He is the fifth active player to reach the milestone.
After wrapping up the three-game homestand, Pittsburgh will have a day off before traveling to Chicago to face the Cubs.
